Salima Met Office status-quo comes under public spotlight
Status - quo of Salima Meteorological Offices has come under spotlight following it's recent outlook. This prompted the line Minister to have an impromptu visit to the site located at Senga-Bay.

SALIMA, Malawi (Planet Defence) – The status – quo of Salima Meteorological Department Offices located at Senga- Bay has attracted public scrutiny and spotlight lately. The premises first came under public spotlight after chair of parliamentary committee on natural resources and climate change, Honourable Werani Chilenga shared the building picture on Weather Chasers Group (WCG).
WCG is a social media platform that flights alert about weather, early warning systems including climate information for the public to utilize and mainstream in their daily planning countrywide. It is managed by the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services.
After the official handover of three tone vehicles to fisheries cooperatives by Fisheries Department under the African Development Bank Group, Sustainable Fisheries Aquaculture Development and Watershed Management on 14th July, 2023 in the district. Â
Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Dr, Micheal Usi and Principal Secretary, Dr. Yusuf Mkungula and other high ranking officials diverted to appreciate the dilapidated state of the building which is under the Ministry’s mandate.
The officials plan to engage the line Department on how to address the state of the premises.
However, some sections of the society have had their own take. The building will need to be fixed, looking at the role it plays to provide climate information to the public says one observer, who passed the site recently.
“I passed by two weeks ago, this building looks abandoned and dilapidated, “observed another passer-bay who was shocked with the recent state of the structure.
Salima Meteorological Offices prepares forecasts for the district from the building, of course the office is intact. There are also vacant rooms present that are not being utilized within the building.
This prompted Traditional Maganga who was present during the visit to request if the other room’s can be utilized to accommodate police to offer services to be public.
